The purpose of this Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) report is to quantify the environmental performance of domestic steel products and publish life cycle inventories that will be available for use in subsequent life cycle assessment studies.
This cradle-to-gate study evaluates the following steel products:
• Hot rolled coil (HRC)
• Pickled hot rolled coil (PHRC)
• Cold rolled coil (CRC)
• Hot-dip galvanized coil (HDG)
• Plate
• Structural sections
These products are manufactured in North American steel mills from both virgin and recycled content. The results are intended to represent average North American production, via both integrated and electric arc furnace, for the reference year 2017.
The intent of this study is to develop steel LCIs that can be used in future LCA studies for various industrial sectors. No specific product function is defined as the steel products under study can each be used in multiple applications. Results in this analysis are presented for 1 kg of steel product.
