Screws are often used to attach metal framing to solid wood members or to attach wood structural panel decking to metal joists or rafters. The AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members provides design equations for screw failure in the steel sheet. The AF&PA National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS) provides design equations for standard wood screw failure in solid wood members. The Engineered Wood Association (APA) and the building codes offer several resources for determining the capacity of screws attaching wood sheathing. This document will discuss these resources and will discuss design and detailing of these fasteners.
